Buckingham Palace, the official residence of the prince’s brother, King Charles, announced the move in a statement on Friday evening, less than two days after the Guardian newspaper began serializing excerpts from Virginia Giuffre’s posthumous memoir. In the first quote, Giuffre, who died by suicide in Australia in April, wrote that the prince considered it his “birthright” to have sex with her. Giuffre accused the prince of sexually assaulting her when she was 17, after Epstein introduced her in 2021. Prince Andrew, who has consistently denied Giuffre’s claims, settled the case in 2022 without admitting liability but made a significant donation to a charity run by Giuffre. The 65-year-old prince gave up his public royal duties in 2019 after an attempt to clear his name in an interview on BBC’s Newsnight program backfired. In his statement, the Prince concluded, after discussions with the king and his “immediate and wider family”, that “ongoing accusations” against the Prince were distracting from “the affairs of Her Majesty and the royal family”. “As always, I decided to put my duty to my family and my country first,” he said. He said he stood by his decision five years ago to stay away from public life, but added: “We now think I have to go one step further. Therefore, I will no longer use my title or the honors bestowed upon me.” A person close to Buckingham Palace said the king was “delighted” with the outcome. The decision means the prince will no longer use the titles Queen Elizabeth gave him when he married Sarah Ferguson in 1986. Ferguson, who divorced the prince in 1996, had long since stopped using her former title of Duchess. The prince will renounce the English title of Duke of York, as well as any remaining titles he has been given, including the Scottish title of Earl of Inverness and the Northern Irish title of Baron of Killyleagh. He will also no longer attend events such as the royal family’s traditional Christmas celebration at Sandringham. He had continued to appear at holiday celebrations since leaving public duties, but was not there last year. The prince, who renounced the title “His Royal Highness” in 2022, will still be referred to as a prince due to his status as the son of the late queen. The change in Prince Andrew’s status represents one of the biggest decisions the king has had to make about the family since taking over from his mother following her death in September 2022. Epstein was found dead in his prison cell. British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell was convicted of sex trafficking and other sex offender-related charges in 2021 and is serving a 20-year sentence in a federal prison. Prince Andrew is just one of several prominent figures on both sides of the Atlantic to face ongoing questions about their ties to Epstein. US President Donald Trump has faced sustained political pressure over his connections The two men were twenty to the sex offender she once described as a friend before they had a falling out more than years ago. Giuffre met Maxwell while working at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. On Friday, a congressional panel investigating the U.S. federal government’s use of Epstein-related materials released part of nearly 8,000 documents from the convicted pedophile’s estate.
