10 Superheroes So Strong They Can Break Reality Itself

Superheroes from Marvel, DC and other publishers have a wide range of powers, stretching from brute strength to the ability to break reality itself. Heroes in this last category are exceedingly rare. The ability to warp and manipulate reality implies god-like abilities, and this makes creating interesting stories about these characters difficult. However, that has not stopped various publishers from creating these types of characters, and even crafting compelling stories around them. In the hands of the proper writers and artists, these heroes have broken everything around them, and in some cases helped put it back together. Here are 10 heroes powerful enough to impact reality.

Legion’s reality-bending abilities have been on display numerous times in Marvel history. The Age of Apocalypse event introduced cool new characters to the X-Men mythos, including Nate Grey, the X-Man. Conceived as an alternate version of Cable, Nate far exceeded his counterpart. In fact, the upper limits of Nate Grey’s powers have never been determined, and even Legion concedes Nate may be more powerful. Nate Grey’s appearances as of late have been sporadic, but a storyline shortly before the dawn of the Krakoan age shows how powerful he was: The Age of X-Man. In this crossover event, Nate created a world where everyone was a mutant. The true reality was later restored, and Nate’s reputation was in shambles.

After a nervous breakdown, Jeroen became the next link in a chain of powerful shamans stretching back to the beginning of time. Initially reluctant to use his powers, the Doctor came around eventually. The Authority without the Doctor is already a very powerful team, but the Doctor, and his ability to manipulate reality, seriously ramps the levels up. Like all denizens of the Fifth Dimension, Bat-Mite possesses powers that make him seem like a god, including the ability to warp the fabric of spacetime. The Flash

The Flash Has Been at the Center of Several Crisis Events

The Flash

First Appearance:

Created By

Flash Comics #1

Gardner Fox and Harry Lampert

While the Flash’s super-speed ability may not give him the ability to rewrite reality in the same way others on this list can, he has nonetheless been at the heart of many of DC’s continuity-busting events, such as Crisis on Infinite Earths and Flashpoint, and it was in the latter this was best on display. At Flashpoint’s beginning, Barry Allen travels back in time to attempt to save his mother and clear his father’s name, which broke the time-stream, creating a dark and unstable world. When the dust settled, a new reality (referred to as “The New 52’) had been temporarily created, and the Flash was instrumental in its birth.

There, he and other survivors watched as the heroic age grew dark, which led to anger and resentment on Superboy’s part. And then he started punching.

Superboy Prime was also partially responsible for Jason Todd’s resurrection.

As revealed during the course of 2005’s Infinite Crisis, Superboy Prime’s tantrums were rewriting reality, causing ripples across the fabric of the universe. He was responsible for nearly every continuity discrepancy in the DC Universe since the first Crisis, including the multiple versions of Hawkman and the Legion of Super-Heroes.

The best display of Franklin’s reality-warping abilities came at the conclusion of the Onslaught saga, when he created a pocket universe for the heroes seemingly killed by the rampaging mutant. For a year, these heroes, including his parents, existed in this universe, unaware of their previous lives. The true scope of Franklin’s powers has never been revealed.

Doctor Manhattan

Doctor Manhattan’s journeys led him to the DC Universe. Fascinated by this reality’s heroes, he began manipulating their history, a move that led to the creation of the New 52. Manhattan’s experiments nearly ended all creation, and ended only when Superman convinced him of the folly of his ways. Very few Marvel characters can compare.
