Why Does Hunter x Hunter Go on Hiatus So Often? Here’s the Real Reason

Few manga inspire the passion and fandom of Hunter x Hunter. Yoshihiro Togashi’s seminal shonen series has often been praised for its thoughtful storytelling, incredible action, and memorable characters. Despite the high praise, though, one element has hung over the franchise like a specter for decades: Hiatuses. Unfortunately, despite the high quality of the story, many fan discussions about Hunter x Hunter focus on the series’ many hiatuses. While Togashi will occasionally release batches of new chapters, Hunter x Hunter spends far more time on hiatus than it does off it. While many deep fans know the real reason Togashi puts off working on the series, it can be easy for more casual fans to miss the behind-the-scenes reason the series goes on hiatus so frequently. Unfortunately, the source of Hunter x Hunter’s frequent delays is Togashi’s health, and it paints a grim picture of the manga industry.
Yoshihiro Togashi’s Health Issues Make Working On Hunter x Hunter Exceptionally Difficult

Togashi has never been shy about sharing the details of his health issues, and many fans speculate that these are problems that stem from years of working as a mangaka. In a July 2022 post to his X account (translated by X user Sandman_AP), Togashi spoke about having to stand in order to color his work, but that he couldn’t manage standing for more than 10 minutes or so.
I have no choice but to stand up when coloring my current drawings. Besides, I have to stand up when drawing a line of the panels. I can’t keep my posture even for 10 minutes, so I have no choice but to roam around. No choice.

In a 2024 post to his X account, the acclaimed creator claimed to have lost 5 kilograms (roughly 11 pounds) of weight due to being bedridden.
Finished the storyboard for one more chapter.
Lost 5kg in weight while bedridden.
The banana on the third day of fasting was so delicious it almost brought tears to my eyes.

Taken together, it’s clear that Hunter x Hunter’s creator has health problems that make the production of manga absurdly difficult. Togashi is far from the only mangaka to suffer at the hands of the manga industry. Naruto’s creator had to delay his honeymoon for years to avoid missing a new chapter release, while Jujutsu Kaisen’s creator had to rely on One Piece’s creator for health tips toward the end of the former series’ serialization. Overall, manga is clearly a difficult industry to work in. Though Togashi’s continued dedication to the franchise is admirable, the work shouldn’t come at the cost of his health. Still, if fans are looking to see what happens next with the series, it’s clear that Togashi is nothing if not a dedicated artist, as more chapters may be released soon.
More Hunter x Hunter Chapters Are Likely Releasing Soon

Currently, the last chapter of Hunter x Hunter released to the public was chapter #410, which was released over a year ago on December 8th, 2024. The latest update fans have gotten regarding the series’ next return is a November 8th post on X where he revealed that the character inking for Chapter #425 was completed, hinting that the next batch release will contain at least 15 chapters.

This would put the new releases slightly ahead of 2024’s drop, as Hunter x Hunter’s 2024 releases only ran from chapter #401 to chapter #410.

While no release date is set, fans can likely expect the new chapters to be released in early or mid-2026. Hopefully, however, Togashi takes it about as easy as he can. While Hunter x Hunter is a truly incredible piece of work that means the world to people across the globe, no piece of art is worth a person’s life or well-being.
