Women’s boxing divisional rankings: New No. 1 at junior middleweight

In Andreas’ free time, he plays video games, obsesses over music and is a White Sox and 49ers fan. He is also a host for Sirius XM’s Fight Nation. Before joining ESPN, Andreas was a senior writer at DAZN and Sporting News. He started his career as a music journalist for outlets including HipHopDX, The Grammys and Jay-Z’s Life+Times. He is also an NAACP Image Award-nominated filmmaker as a producer for the animated short film “Bridges” in 2024.Mikaela Mayer’s move to junior middleweight proved to be a successful one as she thoroughly outclassed Mary Spencer to win a wide unanimous decision and capture the WBA, WBO and WBC 154-pound titles in Montreal last Thursday.Although Spencer had a size advantage, Mayer played the role of attacker, utilizing constant pressure behind a jab and combination punching to pitch a near shutout (100-90, 98-92 and 98-22). Mayer still holds the WBO welterweight title and is now unified at junior middleweight. She has plenty of options for her next fight.Mayer, ESPN’s No. 2-ranked welterweight, climbs to the top of the junior middleweight rankings with her performance against Spencer, who falls to No. 5.Rankings are updated every Tuesday. They’re based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and the quality of opponent. As with almost everything, until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven’t fought in 18 months and don’t have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again. For a list of the current champions in all weight classes, click here.
