This animated musical fantasy by Maggie Kang has become a massive hit since its release in June, sitting on the Netflix Top 10 charts for 27 consecutive weeks, and a sequel has already been greenlit. Now, just days before the end of the year, this movie has reached a brand-new milestone, showing the world how it’s done, done, done. Netflix has announced that KPop Demon Hunters has reached 500 million views since its release on Netflix. It was previously reported that KPop Demon Hunters is the most-watched movie of all time, but this latest news means that this movie is now halfway to reaching the 1 billion views milestone, a record that’s only held by Netflix series like Stranger Things, Squid Game, Wednesday, and Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. KPop Demon Hunters has been a massive success since its release, generating $25 million during its limited theatrical release, and earning a Certified Fresh critics’ score of 95% and a Verified Hot audience score of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, the soundtrack has gained massive streaming numbers, placing second on Spotify’s Top 10 Albums Globally, and “Golden” is the most-streamed track with 1.2 billion streams and placed #7 on Spotify’s Top 10 Songs Globally during this year’s Wrapped. What is ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ About?
KPop Demon Hunters is an animated fantasy film that follows a female K-pop group called Huntr/x, who are secretly demon hunters. They use their singing voice to create a magical barrier called Honmoon. These members consist of Mira (May Hong), the group’s main dancer, Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), the group’s main rapper, and Rumi (Arden Cho), the group’s lead vocalist, who is secretly a half-demon and believes the Honmoon would get rid of her demon marks. Tired of being thwarted by this idol group, Gwi-Ma (Lee Byung-hun) agrees on Jinu’s (Ahn Hyo-seop) plan to create a demon idol group and utilize the fans to weaken Honmoon’s power. Kang acknowledged that the movie left some questions unanswered and said a sequel wouldaddress them. The sequel will be released in 2029, and a plot has yet to be revealed.
