The Last Frontier Episode 3’s Show-Changing Twist Addressed By Stars

WARNING! Spoilers ahead for The Last Frontier episode 3. “Because I’m his wife.” Those four words, spoken by Haley Bennett’s Sidney at the conclusion of The Last Frontier episode 3, change everything we’ve known about the mysterious character so far and set up an intriguing dynamic for the rest of the season. Sidney, of course, is referring to Havlock (AKA Levi), the mysterious man played by Dominic Cooper and thought to be behind the plane crash that released dozens of violent prisoners into the Alaskan wild. Not much is known about Cooper’s character so far, save for the fact that the plane crash was all part of some elaborate plan that is only starting to take shape. Sidney has been adamant about tracking Havlock down, both for the safety of the citizens of the small Alaskan town overseen by Jason Clarke’s Deputy Frank Remnick, but also because he may very well be the key to saving her. In The Last Frontier, everyone has ulterior motives. Each and every prisoner has their own reason for wanting to escape the clutches of the US government. Remnick wants to save the town, but he is also focused on rescuing his wife and locating his missing son. The government, represented here by Alfre Woodard’s CIA official Jacqueline Bradford, is looking to capture Havlock and prevent any secrets he knows from getting out. This is all leading to what is sure to be an explosive confrontation, but first, Sidney’s revelation must be unpacked. ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley spoke with the two stars behind the twist to get their reaction to Sidney’s big reveal and what it means for her and Havlock as the season continues. Of Sidney and Havlock’s relationship, Bennett explained the origins: “The relationship between Sidney and Levi begins as she recruits Levi as an asset for the CIA, and there is an attraction between them, and it was exciting to explore that throughout the flashbacks in the series.” Those flashbacks have been brief, but ultimately revealing, and it certainly sounds like there are more to come. Despite seemingly opposing goals, though, Havlock and Sidney have more in common than the latter would care to admit. “They are each other’s intellectual equal, and every scene between them is like a chess game,” Bennett says. “I loved that aspect of the characters and getting to explore what a CIA agent, this woman, (is in) her sensuality and this budding romance between them.” Of course, that romance is seemingly doomed to crash and burn like the plane that hit that snowy field in Alaska one fateful morning. “Having to destroy the love of your life, and make these impossible decisions, it made for a really interesting dyanmic to explore on screen.” One thing that this new character dynamic reveals is a softer side to Havlock. Initially, The Last Frontier presents Cooper’s character as this Big Bad Villain who is here to wreak havoc across Alaska. But there is a softer side to the character: “He’s seen as this strange, murky moral character, but I always played him as someone who is fighting for the good of the country and seeking the love of his life.” Cooper may not be referring to Sidney here, though. “I don’t know whether I can give away who that is. It was quite interesting to see some of the end product because you realize he’s been really set up as the villain. He’s presented in the pilot with the hood and shackles, he’s talked to as one of the most monstrous people on the planet. People are really terrified of him.” That made Cooper’s job difficult. “How am I going to make this guy likable?” the star asks. “It’s an uphill battle from the beginning. I luckily didn’t think too much about that, but I had to kind of weigh up what the audience knew at what point, because we’re dealing with flashbacks. But I had a wealth of information. We had 10 scripts in front of us when we started, which was an absolute gold (mine), because you could refer back to the past, refer to the future and the present. So it was very enjoyable for that reason.” That this twist comes so soon in The Last Frontier’s 10-episode first season means we’re only scratching the surface of the secrets that Sidney and Havlock have buried. Their relationship will seemingly reveal even more about the operation Havlock is running in Alaska, as well as his connection to the CIA as a whole.
